I went to Loft in Kichijoji and bought some pens, like cheap pens, inexpensive pens, pens that cost less than a hundred bucks. The first of which is something I wasn't expecting to find in a Japanese store. That's what I'm going to review today.<br></p>
<p dir="ltr">The pen is the BallSign by Sakura. Now in Japan, there is a subset of writing instruments called SignPens. SignPens are permanent markers similar to Sharpies. I'm not 100% sure where the name comes from, but I've got a good idea that it comes from the heavy use of the pens by celebrities in signing memorabilia. The signing is fast, inky and permanent. And that's exactly what this pen feels like. A ball pen crossed with a sharpie. But that isn't what makes the pen so unique. Its the way the ink dries.<br></p>
<p dir="ltr">The pen lays a thick inky line on the paper and dries with a sheen like nail polish. This nail polish like ink is what probably leads to the pens permanence. It also makes me think that the pen was designed primarily for decoration purposes. You could write on nearly any surface and have a line that is strong and waterproof. The other avalible colors were mostly pastel colors. Additionally, due to the way the ink dries, you can get a thick bold line that doesn't bleed through the paper. The ink just kind of sits on the paper. So, when you need to write on a paper or a surface that's a little too absorbent this pen will definitely be a good one to have in your arsenal.<br></p>
<p dir="ltr">The pen its self is kind of a cheap body with no weight and just a simple cap. The line is a bit too large to be used as an everyday pen. However, the way the one glides across the paper is an experience all in its self. The pen writes super smooth at a wide range if angles. The other downside is that due to the thick line the ink doesn't last very long. After writing about a page and a half the ink was already down to about two thirds of the way.</p>
<p dir="ltr">But the pen only costs about one hundred yen, about a dollar, so go crazy, fill up those note books. Thus pen is kinda impractical but a lot of fun and seriously inexpensive. The other colors start at 120JPY+tax the black is 100JPY+tax.</p>

The experience has been interesting to say the least but with all the awesome pens I'm surrounded by everyday sometimes it gets frustrating with all the restraining myself I have to do. Sometimes, you loose a little control. Granted, because it's something you sell, it's not going to be an impulse purchase and you're going to know what you're getting yourself into. </span></div><div><br></div><div>I got meself into a Sailor. The only sailor I've talked about so far has been the epic collaboration with Leiji Matsumoto. Did I ever want that bad boy, but in the end, I passed it up, for now. I comes down to the nib. It was only 14k. </div><div><br></div><div>Now, don't get me wrong, there isn't anything bad about a 14k nib and sailor 14k nibs are amongst the best. But if sailor is known for one thing, it's 21k nibs. </div><div><br></div><div>For those of you who don't know the pen industry standard for nibs is 14k or 18k. The only company that I'm aware if using something more than 21k is Danitrio who uses a 24k nib on their Yokuzuna or larger sized pens. The only 21k I know of is Sailor. So, I was saving myself for that sweet 21k experience.</div><div><br></div><div>So, a little history about this specific pen. </div><div><br></div><div>The demonstrator is a limited edition pen that was originally only available at Maruzen stores. When I first saw this baby, it was at the Maruzen in Kyobashi. (Don't worry about place names, there won't be a test) the next day I was talking to my sailor rep and basically begged her to let us carry the pen. Almost a month later, they arrived at our store. </div><div><br></div><div>Now, the thing with demonstrators is you either love them, or you hate them. I've yet to meet a person who is indifferent about the matter. The advantage to demonstrators is also what many view as their disadvantage; you can see inside the pen. Now, I like this. I don't like having to keep opening my pen up to see where my ink level is. To me, it's like hanging a oil gauge on the dashboard instead of having to constantly open up your engine.</div><div><br></div><div>Now, you can see the inside: you can see your cartridge, you can see your converter, you can see your ink. What made this guy special was that sailor now also makes a see through converter. So, the converter I am using matches the pen. You can't see it in the pictures, but the piston is also clearish. </div><div><br></div><div>Make sure to let me know what you think or if you have any questions in the comments below. </div><div><br></div><div>Side note, the ink in the pictures is Sailor's BlueBlack.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-lF3Qi9kgT64/UprPoP2ryVI/AAAAAAAAANM/M-rK38mx4AQ/s640/blogger-image--1570003022.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-lF3Qi9kgT64/UprPoP2ryVI/AAAAAAAAANM/M-rK38mx4AQ/s640/blogger-image--1570003022.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-iwVDSt4NMqw/UprPnDb5vTI/AAAAAAAAANE/PgsKFnABuNg/s640/blogger-image--743994642.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-iwVDSt4NMqw/UprPnDb5vTI/AAAAAAAAANE/PgsKFnABuNg/s640/blogger-image--743994642.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eaIGiFesQjs/UprPl6AZbTI/AAAAAAAAAM8/F_mJYu0DcAo/s640/blogger-image-366315802.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eaIGiFesQjs/UprPl6AZbTI/AAAAAAAAAM8/F_mJYu0DcAo/s640/blogger-image-366315802.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-_-Ri9cXofYQ/UprPpSbVdcI/AAAAAAAAANU/DVk5Q9oVfr4/s640/blogger-image--50609960.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-_-Ri9cXofYQ/UprPpSbVdcI/AAAAAAAAANU/DVk5Q9oVfr4/s640/blogger-image--50609960.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-SIp4nau7muY/UprPk7a-ZDI/AAAAAAAAAM0/wuVTedaSUSU/s640/blogger-image--1518113200.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-SIp4nau7muY/UprPk7a-ZDI/AAAAAAAAAM0/wuVTedaSUSU/s640/blogger-image--1518113200.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12203321422544013066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2398159402313965953.post-18350467889950056802013-08-08T16:19:00.001+09:002013-08-15T09:42:35.588+09:00A test of a few pensSo, it's been a while since my last update. And a lot had happened. Most notably, I purchased a Pilot Elite with a fine nib and I visited the Platinum factory in Saitama. I will post full updates about both of those events at a later date.<br />
<br />
Today, I'm going to just show off a few pens that I have. And by show off, I mean I'm just going to post a picture that I took of me writing on a piece of paper that I wrote on with them.<br />
<br />
The paper is Mnemosyne paper and the grid is 5mm.<br />
<br />
sorry that the picture is HUGE but I just wanted you to be able to see everything.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4-6u4l7N4qs/UgNFf5cgqkI/AAAAAAAAAIo/Qu2LGlsoTLI/s1600/IMG_1897.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4-6u4l7N4qs/UgNFf5cgqkI/AAAAAAAAAIo/Qu2LGlsoTLI/s640/IMG_1897.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The bottom two are Platinum Preppies that I took and ground the nibs down to stubs just to see if I could do it. I plan to take what I learned in grinding the nibs and get a Sailor demonstrator or a Platinum balance demonstrator and do the same with them.<br />

Where should you go? Here's one option for you; Tokyu Hands. This particular review is going to be on the Shinjuku store. I will cover other stores I go to when I visit them. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Well, where do you start when you talk about Tokyu Hands? First off, Tokyu Hands is more or less a store that tries to carry a little bit of everything, with 'a little bit' being the optimal word in the statement. The store is great if you just want to look around and see all sorts of gadgets and doo-dads that are essentially Japanese, including magic tricks, men's and lady's purses and mountain bikes. What they don't offer is variety. This is painfully apparent when you go to the stationary section. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">They have a large stationary section, compared to most places and any person looking for a quick fix of Japanese stationery will have a BALL in this store. However, for those of you serious about Fountain Pens, I can't recommend this store. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">They have a few entry level Fountain Pens, such as the Pilot Cocoon, and a few high end starters, like the Custom 75 and the Heritage 91 iroshizuku series as well as the Platinum #3776 series (black, red, and blue). But they have no true high end fountain pens, nor do they have any limited editions. The only exception was that they did carry the the Pilot Justus 95. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I listened in to the staff talking to a customer and they seemed to be competent, but didn't seem to speak any English. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">There are places that do have English speaking staff with better selections. Since Tokyu Hands Shinjuku doesn't sell things at a discount, nor do they have a bog selection, unless you're pressed for time and aren't looking for anything special, I wont recommend Tokyu Hands Shinjuku for someone looking for proper Japanese Fountain Pens or for any fountain pen. (They done even carry cheap fountain pens like the varsity)</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12203321422544013066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2398159402313965953.post-66039824234503435552013-05-27T17:25:00.000+09:002013-05-27T17:26:59.928+09:00New Raden Inlay finishes to the Capless seriesLet take a minute to talk about Pilot's other new release this week.<br />
<br />
Two new Raden Finishes to their capless(vanishing point) line.<br />
<br />
They pretty much work the same as the old capless, just have a new design for the raden inlay.<br />
<br />
here are a few pictures of the new body. I will take real pictures tomorrow. This is just to keep you tided over until I can get better pictures.<br />
<br />

So the pen, as of now, is inly available at select stores with a full release starting at the beginning of June. <div>Pilot has a long history with this pen, with the first models dating back to the sixties. There have been many different models, some with 18k nibs and others with Stainless Steel bodies.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CsbY_WPDOS0/UaAXiCo2xCI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/kUkx8pw1QDY/s640/blogger-image--375111804.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CsbY_WPDOS0/UaAXiCo2xCI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/kUkx8pw1QDY/s640/blogger-image--375111804.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>The current model has an aluminum cap and a plastic body and grip. The nib of the current model is 14k and comes in three sizes, extra fine, fine, and medium.</div><div><br></div><div>The pen its self is quite small when closed. However, when open with posted cap the pen is as long as most regular pens. This is probably the biggest selling point if the pen, its small enough to fit in pretty much anybody's pocket but long enough to provide most with a comfortable writing experience. </div><div><br></div><div>Pilot is also releasing this right at the start of the cool biz season here in Japan where salary men stop wearing jackets for the summer. This small design is the perfect size for those small short-sleeved shirt pockets. </div><div><br></div><div>The pen comes in two colors, black cap and body with a gold clip and a red body with a brushed aluminum cap and a gold clip. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Po6803Ex7iE/UaAXjPh2qRI/AAAAAAAAAFY/l_GpPfc_7Po/s640/blogger-image-1177558074.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Po6803Ex7iE/UaAXjPh2qRI/AAAAAAAAAFY/l_GpPfc_7Po/s640/blogger-image-1177558074.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>I was lucky to have a chance to try all three nibs and they all lay down a fine wet line and don't seem to have any problems. I preferred the medium nib the best as it has the best glide, but for those who are looking for something with a fine or extra fine point, there are still great pens. </div><div><br></div><div>The pen is priced at ¥10500 (about a hundred bucks) and as i stated earlier, is set for national release at the start of June. </div><div><br></div><div>As of yet, the pen is not posted on Pilot's web page. </div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12203321422544013066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2398159402313965953.post-12292303051646056412013-05-21T16:31:00.002+09:002013-05-21T17:05:46.803+09:00Currently Available Pilot Pen NibsLately I've heard a lot of talk about Pilot's specialty pen nibs. These pens are available through Pilot Japan and I dont know about the rest of the world, but it doesn't seem that they are available for purchase from standard retail locations in North America. Also, there seems to be some confusion abou what pens these nibs are available for. I hope I can clear up some confusion.<br />
<br />
Let's start by talking about what nibs Pilot makes. For the most part there are three main sizes, all with the same shape. They have recently expanded this selection to incorporate an additional, smaller size. We will call these nibs No.5, No.10 & No.15, just to make it easy.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The 5 only comes in standard sizes (EF・F・SF・FM・SFM・M・SM・B・BB) while the additional speciality sizes are available on the 10 and 15 (EF・F・SF・FM・SFM・M・SM・B・BB・C・PO・FA・WA・SU) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The available nibs for the 5 and 10 come in both standard gold and rhodium plating, the 15 is only available in gold. (if you don't count the nibs on the ichii no ki or the Custom 845, but we'll talk all about those beauties later) The color of the nib, on standard pilot pens, is meant to match the color of the clip. Since they don't make a pen with a silver clip that fits the 15 they don't produce a rhodium plated nib in that size.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The 15 variates of nibs are only available from Pilot on the Custom 742, Custom 743 and the Heritage 912 (rhodium plated) all with black bodies only. The other available colors come standard with only EF・F・M・B nibs.<br />

It's hard to describe the feeling that comes over you when you find the perfect pen. When you see it, you know that it was made for you. Obviously, living and working in Japan, I have a degree of interest in Japanese language and culture. So, when sailor came up with a collaboration with legendary Japanese Manga/Animation creator, Leiji Matsumoto(松本零士) I was blown away. I knew that I would have to purchase this pen. It pretty much sums up everything that I like in one little package. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I actually had the opportunity to test one that a customer was purchasing from our store. Even though it is only a 14K nib its incredibly smooth and glides across the paper and writes an inky firm line. The nib its self is marked with the legendary Anime Artist's signature. The pen is designed to look like a starship from one of his manga and is marked with the symbol of the Space Pirate Captain Harlock. Included with the pen is a bottle of Special Leiji Blue ink, a holster for the pen, a converter and a special message from Matsumoto-sensei.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The pictures below show the image details but do no justice for how beautiful the blue is. The blue is the blue you would see on a warm summer's evening and has sparkles to make it shimmer under light and gives it the feel of gazing up into the universe.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I know that it's a bit of money, but being that it is a limited edition and sums up what I do and where I have been, it's also not a pen that one buys every day or will have the opportunity to buy again.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If anyone else has this pen or is thinking about buying it or has had the chance to try it out, leave me a comment and let me know what you think.</div>

I sell pens, fountain pens in particular.</div><div><br></div><div>I'm left handed and have terrible handwriting. </div><div><br></div><div>I know that there are a few sites out there about writing instruments and stationery supplies, but I am going to focus primarily on Japanese stationary supplies. This mainly being products made in Japan but I will also talk about stationery supplies from other countries as long as they can be purchased in Tokyo. </div><div><br></div><div>I work in a high-end sales floor that focuses on writing supplies and accessories. So, typically, I wont be writing about anything less than ¥5000.
